Yuling Chen is a Chinese Canadian new media artist. She is specialized in making works about beauty, labour and racial tensions using media archives exploring histories of new media art. She was born in 1990 on the southern small island of China, Hainan Island, in the city of Danzhou. When she was young she led a nomadic life moving from cities to cities, homes to homes and places to places. Thus, she had discovered her love in literature, obsession with identity, and eyes for design.
Collages Fashion
I have been working on collages since 2015 when I just got into OCAD University. I have specifically focused on it since 2020. Collages Fashion is a work I used torn images of found books and vogue magazines. It criticizes male beauty standards with its juxtaposing of fashion and art imageries. It advocates for a freer expression of self that doesn’t focus on selling the clothes.
