The fact that Roy Lichtenstein… exhibition at the Whitney museum is not only gay but also extravagant has made many people wonder about its intentions. The work “look micky” assembles the cartoon characters and remakes its narrative of peace making negotiations between superpowers. It’s telling people to look while handing out trophy position to the micky mouse characters as a buddy that’s in on the joke. It corresponds to Whitney Museum’s location, its geographical advantage over the rivers, over the leisure class and their activities. Donald Duck and Micky mouse are placed in an environment suffused with nationalistic patriotism. Are they soldiers in captivity? Or are they friends who cannot escape their whiteness? People don’t know until they really look.
